Individual Scoring Records Of The Ottawa 67's

The Ottawa 67's have been one of the most consistently successful teams in the Ontario Hockey League since entering the league in 1967. The individual offensive records of the 67's are impressive and some of the best performances the OHL has ever seen.

Like many Ontario Hockey League teams that have been around since at least the 1970’s, all the important individual single season offensive records of the Ottawa 67’s were set nearly forty years ago. In the six seasons between 1972-73 and 1977-78, the team’s individual records for most goals, assists, points, points by a rookie and points by a defenseman were set.

Peter led the OHL with 81 goals that season, although his 161 points were good enough for just second place. Lee is also the Ottawa 67’s all-time leader in career goals and points. He was selected as the CHL Player of the Year in 1975-76 and went on to a five year NHL career with the Pittsburgh Penguins before becoming a long time star in Germany.

The team’s individual records for most assists and points were set in the same year by the same player. Bobby Smith had 123 assists and 192 points in 1977-78. Both these totals are not only Ottawa 67’s records but still stand today as OHL single season records. That season, Smith was ten points ahead of Wayne Gretzky of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Smith was the first overall pick in the NHL Amateur Draft in 1978 by the Minnesota North Stars and went on to a lengthy NHL career with Minnesota and the Montreal Canadiens.

The same year that Bobby Smith was setting the OHL points record and Wayne Gretzky was setting the OHL record for most points as a rookie (182), Jim Fox was setting the Ottawa 67’s record for most points by a rookie. Although 55 points behind Gretzky, Fox’s 127 points was still very respectable and stands as the team record. Fox went on to play for the Los Angeles Kings, playing 11 games with Gretzky in Jim’s final season with the club, 1989-90. Unfortunately, his career was cut short by a severe knee injury.

The year before winning the Calder Trophy with the New York Islanders as the NHL’s top first year player, Denis Potvin racked up 123 points while playing defence for the Ottawa 67’s. That total still stands as the most by an Ottawa defenseman in a single season. The mark is 32 points shy of the OHL and CHL record set in 1988-89 by Bryan Fogarty of the Niagara Falls Thunder. Potvin went on to win three Norris Trophies and four Stanley Cups in the NHL and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991.
