The Los Angeles Kings have been a member of the National Hockey League for well over four decades now. The team has reached the Stanley Cup finals just once, in 1992-93, but is threatening to do it again in 2012. In their time in the NHL, the Kings have surpassed 100 points in a single regular season on three occasions.
The 1993 Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremony featured four National Hockey League greats. Two played major roles in the Montreal Canadiens Stanley Cup dynasty of the 1970's. One guarded between the pipes for the New York Islanders as they won four consecutive Stanley Cup championships in the 1980's. The fourth played with the New York Rangers in the 1940's and 1950's.
1930-31 brought an end of an era to the National Hockey League with the Philadelphia Quakers and Ottawa Senators ceasing operations. It marked the last time the league would have ten or more teams until 1967. Howie Morenz was in the prime of his career and he helped to Montreal Canadiens to their fourth Stanley Cup victory.
The Washington Capitals have been in the National Hockey League since 1974-75. The team was dreadful in their first season, setting NHL records for futility. The Capitals have produced some great teams and players through the years since and long outlasted their expansion cousin, the Kansas City Scouts. Four players in Washington's NHL history have topped 100 points in a season. One player, Alex Ovechkin, has done it four times to date.
The New York Islanders have produced some of the most explosively offensive players in National Hockey League history. Seven different players in Islanders history have surpassed the 100 point plateau in a single season. Mike Bossy accomplished the feat seven times and Bryan Trottier did it on six occasions. The Islanders entered the NHL for the 1972-73 season.
The New York Rangers have been a fixture in the National Hockey League since the 1926-27 season. The Rangers are one of the Original Six teams that existed before the 1967-68 NHL expansion. The team has produced six players that have surpassed the 100 point plateau in a single season. The first was in 1971-72 and the most recent was in 2005-06.
The Belleville Bulls have existed as an Ontario Hockey League franchise since the 1981-82 season. The top 5 individual single season points totals in Bulls history are quite respectable. Interestingly, three of the five have not appeared in a regular season National Hockey League game and one of the two that did was much more well known for his fighting than his scoring.
The Ottawa 67's entered the Ontario Hockey League for the 1967-68 season, named for the Canadian Centennial that occurred in 1967. Ottawa has produced some extremely successful teams through the years but it's the individual offensive performances of so many players that sets the team above all the rest. Most of these players have gone on to careers in the National Hockey League.
The London Knights began their days in the Ontario Hockey League as the London Nationals in 1965. The team changed its name in 1968 to reflect the team no longer being affiliated with the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs. The Knights have produced some great players and have certainly produced some high scorers. The top five single season individual performances all are 145 points or better.
The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League have produced some great teams since joining the league in 1972-73. The Greyhounds have consistently produced great hockey players, including Joe Thornton, Wayne Gretzky, Craig Hartsburg and Ron Francis. When the Les Cunningham Award was first introduced in 1947-48 for the American Hockey League's most valuable player, the Providence Reds had already been established in the league for over a decade. Between 1947-48 and 1976-77, when the franchise moved out of Providence, four Reds were awarded the Cunningham Award. In fact, the first recipient of the award went to a player from Providence.
The James Norris Memorial Trophy has been in existence in the National Hockey League since Red Kelly of the Detroit Red Wings won it for the first time in 1953-54. At 14, players from the Boston Bruins have won the Norris Trophy more times than any other NHL team. Just three players have accounted for the 14 victories.
The Boston Bruins have had eight different Calder Memorial Trophy winners since the award was inaugurated in 1936-37. Since the National Hockey League expanded from six to twelve teams for the 1967-68 season, the Bruins have had four Calder Trophy winners. Easily the most significant winner was Hockey Hall of Fame defenseman Ray Bourque who won in 1979-80.
Since the first NHL Amateur Draft was held in 1963, the Boston Bruins have selected first overall just three times. The first played few games with the Bruins before being traded to the Minnesota North Stars. The second had his career devestated by knee injuries and the third is currently a star in the National Hockey League with the San Jose Sharks.
The Windsor Spitfires entered the Ontario Hockey League for the 1975-76 season, when it was known as the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League. The Spitfires have made it to the final round of the Robertson Cup playoffs on four occasions to date. Windsor won the Robertson Cup on three of those occasions, subsequently qualifying for the Memorial Cup in those years.
